Today we are going to take a look at the greatest vocal exercise of all time.

Greatest Vocal Exercise of All Time

Now I know that there are so many wonderful vocal exercises out there but I believe that one of the best would have to be the Lip Buzz or Lip Trill.

What is a Lip Buzz?

A lip buzz has two main parts.

  1. First practice buzzing your lips together as though you are blowing bubbles.
  2. Next add to that a hum.

It is important when you do lip buzzes to make sure you have a relaxed buzz so you don’t push the larynx up too high.

Why is the Lip Buzz so Awesome?

  1. The lip buzz is great way for relaxing your voice and helping make everything relaxing.
  2. This is a great exercise for expanding your vocal range because your voice will be relaxed.
  3. This is a great exercise for helping to connect your chest and head voice without a vocal break in the middle of your voice.
  4. It is also really effective in making sure that you don’t push too much air through your singing.
  5. This is also a great exercise to do when you are have a cold to help gently warm up or cool down your voice. This is gentle on your voice and also helps to vibrate any phlegm you have.

Troubles with Lip Buzz

  1. One of the issues that people have with lip buzzes is that they will buzz too tightly. The sound should relaxed and slow.
  2. Another issue that people will have is sometimes starting the lip buzz. To solve this you can put two fingers on the opposite sides of your lips and push slightly upward. This will create a similar connection as though you were singing a consonant and it will help you keep your lips together.
  3. Another issue that sometimes people will have is that they can start the lip buzz but they can’t keep it going. If that is the case you are either pushing through too much air or too little. If you play with the pressure of the air you will be able to find the proper balance.

Vocal Exercises

With the Lip Buzz exercise we are going to do a 5 note scale going up and then down. You can see the example below.

How to Apply to Song

  1. The best way to use this in a song is to take your high notes passages and work them with a lip buzz.
  2. After that take the passage and sing it on a Ah vowel.
  3. The final step is to be able to put your lyrics back into the song.

I hope you enjoyed your lesson today on the greatest vocal exercise of all time. Stay tuned for more piano and vocal exercises for your musical adventure.
