How Do You Increase Your Vocal Range?

One of the questions I get often about singing is “How do you increase your vocal range?” We all want to sing higher and lower and that is one of the key ways to improving your voice.

Things That Get in the Way of You Improving

There are three main culprits that get in the way of us increasing our vocal range.

Tension – One of the big barriers to our vocal range is tension. Tense muscles push on your vocal chords limiting your vocal range. When you can relax you will find it easier to hit your notes.
Your Mental Game – A lot of singing comes down to your mental game. When you tell yourself that you can’t reach those high notes you make it harder to sing.
Practice – Increasing your vocal range take lots of practice and repetition. If you aren’t singing those high and low notes regularly you won’t be able to reach them. You should be working on your vocal range daily in order to increase and improve your vocal range. If you aren’t practicing it won’t get better.

The first thing you need to do is to be able develop your ear because if you don’t know if you are on tune you are going to have a hard time fixing your pitch. To work on this you can record yourself singing and listen back to yourself to develop your ear. The next step is to work on breath control. If you are sharp you need to sing lower and balance your weight on the heels of your feet and if you are flat focus on getting a deep breath and balancing your weight on the balls of your feet. This will help to open up your diaphragm muscles to help you breath deeper to get back on pitch. Learning to sing on tune takes lots of time and practice but if you work hard singing on tune is achievable.
