What Do Music Lessons Look Like?

When I start my first lesson with my students one of the first things I ask is, “What are your goals?” It is important for me to know that because it helps me to tailor fit the lessons for you. Some of my piano students want to be note reading and others like to chord and improvise or learn songwriting. So when I can take into account your goals I find music lessons are more successful. Music lessons typically contain a warm-up, ear training/technique, playing/singing of your songs, and music theory.

How Long Are Lessons?

Piano and voice lessons usually start at $19/half hour. Beginner lessons are 30 minutes, Intermediate is 45 minutes, and Advanced is an hour long. A combined piano and voice lesson is a minimum of an hour long. Please be in touch with Linnea to make sure what is a correct time for you.

What Ages Do You Teach?

Music lessons are for all ages going from kids up to adults. Children are ready for music lessons at different ages based on their interest and attention span.

How Do I Know if My Child is Ready for Lessons?

  1. Lessons start at 30 minutes. Music lessons include a warm-up exercises, songs, and theory exercises. So if your child can maintain focus for 15-30 minutes they are probably ready for lessons.
  2. They also should know their letter A-G and numbers 1-5. This is so that they can both read their musical alphabet and their finger numbers for piano. For voice students they should be starting at 5-6 years of age and able to read simple words. This is so they can learn the lyrics to their songs.
  3. Children should want to learn music. Practicing music can at times be exciting and also difficult. So if they are excited in learning music it will be easier for them to motivated.

How Much Should I Practice Music?

  • Preschool/Kindergarten: 10-20 minutes a day for 5 days/week
  • Grade 1-3: 20-30 minutes a day for 5 days/week
  • Grade 4-6: 30-40 minutes a day for 5 days/week
  • Junior High: 45 minutes a day for 5 days/week
  • High School: 1 hour a day for 5 days/week

What Music Books Do You Suggest?

Here are some of the music books that I suggest.

  • Piano Adventures -My First Piano – Book 1
  • Piano Adventure Lesson Book- Primer, Level 1, Level 2A, Level 2B
  • Piano Adventures for the Older Beginner-Lesson Book 1 & Book 2
  • Mark Sarnecki Elementary Music Theory-Book 1, Book 2, Book 3
  • Royal Conservatory Primer B – Theory, Repertoire
  • Royal Conservatory Level 1-Theory, Repertoire, Etudes
  • Royal Conservatory Level 2-Theory, Repertoire, Etudes
  • Royal Conservatory Level 3-Theory, Repertoire, Etudes
  • Royal Conservatory Level 4-Theory, Repertoire, Etudes
  • Royal Conservatory Level 5-Theory, Repertoire, Etudes

Is a Keyboard or Piano Better to Practice On?

It is better to have practice on a piano then a keyboard because you need the weight of they keys to get good dynamics. If your only option though is to get a keyboard I suggest renting a keyboard until you can afford a piano. The keyboard you look for should have 88 keys and be full weighted.

  • Roland RD-2000 Stage Piano
  • Roland Pedal

  • 1/4 Inch Cord
  • Hercules Keyboard Stand
