…How Do You Increase Your Vocal Range?
One of the questions I get often about singing is “How do you increase your vocal range?” We all want to sing higher and lower and that is one of the key ways to improving your voice.
Things That Get in the Way of You Improving
There are three main culprits that get in the way of us increasing our vocal range.
- Tension – One of the big barriers to our vocal range is tension. Tense muscles push on your vocal chords limiting your vocal range. When you can relax you will find it easier to hit your notes.
- Your Mental Game – A lot of singing comes down to your mental game. When you tell yourself that you can’t reach those high notes you make it harder to sing.
- Practice – Increasing your vocal range take lots of practice and repetition. If you aren’t singing those high and low notes regularly you won’t be able to reach them. You should be working on your vocal range daily in order to increase and improve your vocal range. If you aren’t practicing it won’t get better.

…Breathing
Breathing is essential to singing because when you sing the breath passes over the vocal chords and creates sound. Without breath there is no sound.
How to Breathe
If you look at a baby when they breathe you would notice that they use their stomach (diaphragm muscles). As they breathe in their stomach relaxes and pushes out to allow air into the lungs. When they breathe out the diaphragm muscles draw into the body. The problem is that we can carry stress in our bodies so we can have a shallower breath.
